"Teachers who love teaching, teach children to love learning."
I student taught in a first grade classroom at Jordan Road School in the Somers Point School District from January 2016-April 2016. I taught 18 students and 6 of those students were English Language Learners.

Observing Guppies
They already knew so much about guppies. I was amazed with their prior knowledge!
|
The 1st grade science curriculum is based upon the Inquiry-Based model of instruction, which is awesome! The students were supposed to study a freshwater environment with actual organisms, but the guppies and snails never arrived! Therefore, I took it upon myself to make a quick trip to PetSmart to buy some fun class pets that we could observe and learn more about. I developed a super fun lesson that the students absolutely loved, and they learned so much. I even wrote my own All About Guppies book (linked below), so naturally they all wanted my autograph because they thought I was a famous author! |
Our freshwater aquarium with Elodea and Cabomba plants, as well as 4 pond snails and 4 guppies!

George Washington
These are the questions the students had to answer as they read the text.
|
In honor of President's Day, I taught a lesson about George Washington. Social studies and science typically get pushed to the side due to ELA and mathematics being the central focus. I try my best to develop cross-curricular lessons, so social studies and science do not have to be deleted from the day. Therefore, this lesson involved students reading a grade-level text about George Washington. They were provided with questions that had to be answered as they read, and they had to find text evidence within the book to support their answers to the questions. It was challenging, but they did a superb job. It is never too early to teach research skills!

A few of the artifacts that the students were given in order to guess which historical figure we were going to learn about!
|
This is the template I gave to the students to complete after answering the questions. They had to write 6 facts they learned about George Washington!
|
The students asked if everyone in the class could have a dollar bill, so they could study him better... clever kids!
|
The most laugh inducing artifact that a very confused student received! "Why do I have a piece of wood?" "George Washington had wooden teeth!" "Oh that is not cute..."
